What Is Local AI and Does Your Small Business Need It?
1 min readAI & automation
Local AI runs on your own hardware, so your data does not leave your machine. Cloud AI runs on a provider’s servers. Local AI is not automatically better — it is a trade-off, and for many small businesses ordinary cloud AI is simpler and cheaper.
The trade-offs
- Privacy — local keeps data on your machine; cloud sends it to a provider.
- Hardware — local needs a reasonably capable machine; cloud needs only a browser or app.
- Cost — local is paid for in hardware and electricity; cloud is paid per use.
- Speed — local can be slower and depends on your GPU.
- Offline use — local works without internet; cloud does not.
- Maintenance — local needs updates and setup; cloud is managed for you.
When local AI is worthwhile
- You handle sensitive client or internal data that cannot be sent to a third party.
- You need the tool to work offline or in a restricted environment.
- You use it heavily enough that per-use cloud costs add up.
When normal cloud AI is simpler
- You are doing everyday drafting, summarising or brainstorming with non-sensitive material.
- You want to start quickly without buying hardware.
- You do not need offline use.
The honest answer
We do not present local AI as automatically superior. The right choice depends on what you are processing, how often, and how sensitive it is. A short assessment can tell you whether local AI is worth it for your situation.
