Local & private AI · practical answers
How much does it cost to set up private AI?
Scope and starting price
Choose the relevant service below. We confirm the systems covered, checks and final price before work begins. Additional work and third-party costs need to be included in the agreed quote.
Ollama Setup
From £149
A local model server installation and configuration, with the model, machine and handover agreed in the quote.
Local & Private AI servicesHardware Suitability Assessment
From £79
Check an existing machine before committing to an installation or buying replacement hardware.
Local & Private AI servicesLocal Coding Assistant
From £199
Connect a suitable local model to an agreed coding workflow; a separate scope from a basic model server.
Local & Private AI servicesStart with one useful task
Describe a piece of work you already do: drafting internal notes, helping with code, or summarising a document you are allowed to use. We can then agree an example that demonstrates whether the chosen setup is useful. A model that launches successfully still needs to be checked against your actual task.
A focused setup should identify the model, where it runs, how you start and stop it, and how you repeat the agreed example. A shared interface, document search, account permissions or connections to business software add work and need their own scope.
What does “private” mean here?
Ollama supports both local and cloud models. Its documentation says local prompts stay local, while cloud models send prompts for remote processing. Ollama also provides a setting to disable its cloud features.
The whole setup matters: the chat interface, extensions, document processing, logs and external tools can have their own data paths. Tell us which information must stay on your equipment so the proposed configuration and checks address that requirement.

What changes the quote?
Driver problems, limited memory, more than one user, a larger document collection and custom software connections can expand the work. Hardware purchases, paid software and any external hosting should be identified separately before you agree to them.
If suitability is uncertain, begin with the hardware assessment. It gives you a way to decide whether to reuse the machine, reduce the task or consider an upgrade before paying for a wider installation.
Is this the right fit?
A good fit when
- You have a specific internal task and want to assess a model on equipment you control.
- You want a clear distinction between local processing and any optional external services.
Limits of the scope
- A basic installation does not include a document search system, model training or every coding-tool integration.
- It does not include new hardware, ongoing maintenance or a promise that every answer will be correct.
What to prepare for an enquiry
- Your operating system, processor, memory, graphics card and available storage, if known.
- One or two example tasks using invented or non-sensitive information.
- Whether internet access, cloud processing or sharing with other users is permitted.
Start with a description and non-sensitive examples. Leave out passwords, API keys, private keys, recovery codes and customer data. Access arrangements are agreed separately if the work needs them.
Common questions
Can I use the computer I already own?
Possibly. Send the specification and intended task first. Hardware suitability and useful response speed need to be assessed together; buying a new graphics card is not the automatic first step.
Is a local model completely offline?
That depends on the complete workflow. The model and required software must be available locally, and cloud features or external tools must be excluded where offline use is required. Offline operation should be part of the agreed demonstration.
Is document Q&A included?
Private document Q&A is separately quoted. It adds document preparation, search, access rules and evaluation to the model installation.
